The 1st International Opera Competition in Shizuoka was inaugurated in 1996, and the 2nd and the 3rd competitions took place triennially in 1999 and 2002. Through the achievements of the previous competition, in 2003, the competition became the first in Asia to be accepted as a member of the World Fereration of International Music Competitions（WFIMC）in the category of Opera. In this occasion, the competition was renamed Shizuoka International Opera Competition. In 2005 the 4th competition took place successfully, and in 2008 the 5th edition of this competition was the first time a competitor from Japan took 1st prize.

Now prizewinners of the past competitions have gone on to successful careers all around the world. The Shizuoka International Opera Competition will earn more attention worldwide.
