Guide for Applicant

1.Name

The 6th Shizuoka International Opera Competition

2.Aim of the Competition

The Shizuoka International Opera Competition aims to discover young talented musicians and give a boost to their careers in the field of vocal music. It also hopes to contribute to the world-wide promotion of Shizuoka's culture through international cultural exchange. In commemoration of the diva, MIURA Tamaki*, profoundly related to Shizuoka Prefecture, the Competition has been held every three years since 1996, the 50th year after her death.

*MIURA Tamaki
MIURA Tamaki is regarded as the very first Japanese soprano to achieve world renown. She played the title role in the opera, Madama Butterfly, and the number of her performances around the world reached more than 2,000. The composer, Puccini, greatly admired Ms. Miura, stating that it seemed Madama Butterfly had been written for her. Ms. Miura's parents and husband were Shizuoka natives and she herself had once lived in this prefecture.
