The world is becoming ever more globalized and the university ago population in Japan continues to drop. Yet, Japan currently still has the world’s third largest economy. To what extent should we involved in university English teaching in Japan consider these facts in our teaching? Reputable sources suggest that about 25% of the world's population is either fluent or competent in English, and this figure is steadily growing. In the future, more and more Japanese can be expected to use English even here in Japan. My current research is concerned with the teaching of English-medium courses; “teaching in English” not “teaching English.” The more exposure to authentic and natural English students receive while in university the more it is likely to help them once they embark on their careers.
